Gumroad just messed up and here are 40 alternatives to switch to
Indie founders across the globe are building awesome products both in the B2B and B2C space. Gumroad has been helping indie founders sell their digital products and courses online by being the all-in-one eCommerce platform. From product listing to taking payments, Gumroad has been the go-to platform for hundreds of creators and founders, apart from Stripe.
Recently, Gumroad made a major announcement and the customers are now searching for alternatives to switch to. An upcoming change on the pricing page of Gumroad sparked quite an uproar within the creator/indie hacker community.
What did Gumroad do?
After being the trusted platform for online creators to sell their digital products for years, Gumroad recently made an announcement about an upcoming price change.
That messed things up for Gumroad.
What used to be tiered pricing at Gumroad is now changing to a flat fee of 10%.
What used to be a freemium model with tiered pricing, starting at 9% for low transaction accounts, to all the way up to 2.9% for revenue up to $1,000,000. The more money you made, the lesser you paid in fees.
With the new pricing, the amount went up just 1% from the previous 9%, but the real deal comes into play when the 3-7 % bank and processing charges are taken into account.
For a creator with an average MRR of $1000, what used to be around 5% in fees, is now becoming a 10% platform fee. What used to be having a lower platform fee with the increase in earnings, will now be eating into the earnings of many indie founders and creators who choose not to abandon ship. They have been working really hard to hit the earnings milestones to bring down the platform fees.
With creators frantically searching for platforms to switch their sales and delivery ecosystem that fits their product and requirement, the alternative services are ramping up the marketing efforts and improving their tech.
